Notice: Active Advisory in effect for Del Norte, Marin, Humboldt, and Orange counties. Also, there is a statewide annual quarantine of sport-harvested mussels. Read the below message for more details, or call the California Department of Public Health's Biotoxin Information Line at (800) 553-4133.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is monitoring for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins and Domoic Acid, which can cause Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP). These naturally occurring marine toxins can cause severe illness or death in humans after eating contaminated seafood. Important: Cooking does not destroy these toxins. To be safe, Please follow the restrictions below:

Current Health Advisories for Shellfish

Statewide Annual Quarantine of Sport-Harvested Mussels (MAY 1, 2025 - OCTOBER 31, 2025). DO NOT CONSUME any sport-harvested mussels.

Quarantined Location(s):

Reason: Annual Quarantine of Sport-Harvested Mussels.

Orange County: DO NOT CONSUME any sport-harvested bivalve shellfish (mussels, clams, and scallops)

Quarantined Location(s):

Reason: Dangerous levels of Domoic Acid and paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins have been found in shellfish in these areas.

Del Norte and Marin Counties: DO NOT CONSUME sport-harvested harvested mussels, clams, scallops or oysters

Quarantined Location(s):

Reason: Dangerous levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins have been detected in mussels in these areas.

Del Norte and Humboldt Counties: DO NOT CONSUME sport-harvested razor clams

Quarantined Location(s):

Reason: Dangerous levels of Domoic Acid have been detected in razor clams in these areas.

Long-standing Rock Crab Advisory- Do NOT consume rock crabs from:

Quarantined Locations:

  • Mendocino-Humboldt County line to Cape Mendocino
  • North Jetty of Humboldt Bay to the California-Oregon border
  • Waters around Santa Rosa Island & the Northern Channel Islands

Reason: Long-standing health advisories remain in place due to a lack of data to remove them.
